MICHIGAN STATE DEFEATS #25 MINNESOTA 5-3 AT SIEBERT FIELD

Trailing 5-2 in the ninth, senior Aron Amundson doubled to right field to start the inning. After the Spartans collected two outs, Josh Holthaus and Adam Horton each reached base on walks. With the bases loaded, reliever Josh Axelson hit John Nuss with a pitch which scored a run to make it 5-3. Redshirt freshman Scott Howard failed to keep the rally going though with a strikeout to end the game.
Minnesota took an early lead with a RBI single from freshman Jack Hannhan in the first inning. The Golden Gophers tacked on another run in the third on a single by Amundson.
The Spartans took control of the game in the fourth inning with three runs off of Gopher starter Brad Pautz. Michigan State added two more runs in the sixth. In the game the Spartans collected 10 hits, but none were for extra bases.
Pautz (8-3) lasted six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Juniors Vince Gangl and Bob DeWitt pitched the final three innings and surrendered just one hit, but combined to walk four.
Spartan starter Scott Brandell (5-4) allowed nine hits and walked five, but just gave up two runs in his 6.1 innings. Axelson picked up his fourth save of the year.
Minnesota's Matt Scanlon hit his 29th double on the year in the fourth inning. The two-bagger was his 29th of the season which tied Robb Quinlan's single- season school record set in 1997. Scanlon is second in the nation in doubles.
