Neels, Morton, Sutherland Named All-Big Ten Honorees

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – Three members of the University of Minnesota baseball team were named All-Big Ten honorees this morning, as announced by the Big Ten conference.

 

Senior catcher Weber Neels was named an All-Big Ten first team honoree, junior pitcher Isaac Morton was named an All-Big Ten second team honoree, while junior outfielder Charlie Sutherland was named an All-Big Ten third team honoree and Minnesota's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner.

 

A native of Cottage Grove, Minn., Neels led all starters in batting average (.377), OPS (1.040), slugging percentage (.603), hit by pitches (16), and sacrifice flies (8). The senior backstop also ranked second on the team in total hits (62), home runs (13), RBIs (53), total bases (111), and on-base percentage (.437). Defensively, Neels tallied 397 total putouts with 27 assists behind the plate and caught seven runners stealing.

 

Morton, a native of Blaine, Minn., tallied a 4-2 record and a 3.26 ERA as a mainstay in the starting weekend rotation for the Gophers. Morton led the Minnesota pitching staff with 63 total strikeouts, and held opposing batters to a .211 average throughout 60.2 innings of work.

 

A native of Duluth, Minn., Sutherland led all Gopher starters in total hits (63), and RBIs (56). The junior outfielder also ranked second on the team in batting average (.325), OPS (1.006), and slugging percentage (.572). After starting the year as the everyday DH, Sutherland moved into the starting right fielder spot mid-season and went on to tally 36 total putouts with two assists for a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage.
