John Anderson Celebration of Life Set to Take Place Aug. 10 at Maturi Pavillion

University of Minnesota baseball coach John Anderson passed away on July 26 at the age of 71. The Anderson family has announced that a public celebration of life service will take place on Monday, August 10 at the University of Minnesota's Maturi Pavilion.
Maturi Pavilion's main lobby (west entrance) will open to attendees at 5:00 p.m., and the service will start at 6:00 p.m. It is expected to last between 60-90 minutes and will feature multiple speakers. Seating for the general public will be available on the south side of Maturi Pavilion. Water/soda and food will be available for purchase on the south side of Maturi Pavilion. Semi-formal, maroon and gold attire is encouraged.
Anderson came to the University of Minnesota in 1974 and held a remarkable 49-year tenure as a student-athlete, assistant coach and head coach. He finished his 43-year head coaching career with a 1,390-1,021-3 record, ranking first in the Big Ten and 20th all-time among NCAA Division I coaches in career victories.
The Gophers had winning seasons in 38 of Anderson's 43 years as head coach, and Minnesota had 31 seasons with at least 30 wins and 10 seasons with at least 40 wins.
Under Anderson, Minnesota finished first or second in the Big Ten standings 24 times, advanced to 20 Big Ten Tournament championship games and qualified for the conference tournament in 31 of 38 seasons. Anderson was named Big Ten Coach of the Year eight times, first as a rookie head coach in 1982 and most recently in 2018.
Minnesota made 19 NCAA postseason appearances under Anderson, including a historic 2018 season in which the Gophers hosted an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2000 and advanced to the program's first NCAA Super Regional, marking Minnesota's best postseason finish since reaching the College World Series in 1977.
Seven different Gophers earned 13 All-America First Team honors under Anderson, and at least 25 of his former players suited up in Major League Baseball.
His No. 14 was retired by the program when he retired after the 2024 season.
