Five male student-athletes were recognized as the Top Five Scholar-Athletes of the Year. They include: senior swimmer John Cahoy, junior gymnast Chad Conner, senior track athlete Glenn Lindqvist, junior track athlete Staffan Strand and junior gymnast Matt Kieffer.
Cahoy, a native of Hudson, Wis., has earned a 4.0 GPA in all four years at the University of Minnesota with a double major in chemistry and biochemistry. In 1999, Cahoy was named the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year. He also was named to the first team GTE/ CoSIDA Academic All-American team in 1998. At the 1999 Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships, Cahoy was a member of four title winning relay teams. He was also a member of the 800 free relay that placed seventh to earn first team All-America honors at the NCAA Championships.
Junior gymnast Chad Conner, from Dallas, Texas, has a 3.86 GPA in the Carlson School of Management. Conner is a three-time letterwinner on the Golden Gopher gymnastics team specializing in the parallel bars and the horizontal bar.
Senior Glenn Linqvist, a native of Aland, Finland, holds a 3.82 GPA in the Carlson School of Management. Lindqvist is currently ranked fourth in the nation in the decathalon and placed fourth in the event with 7,578 points at the Mt. SAC Relays earlier this season.
Strand, from Upplands-Vasby, Sweden, has a 3.79 GPA in the Institute of Technology. He is a three-time All- American and a five-time Big Ten Champion in the high jump. Strand most recently won the 1999 indoor Big Ten high jump title with a jump of seven foot one, and three-fourths.
Junior gymnast Matt Kieffer, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., has recorded a 3.76 GPA in the Carlson School of Management. Keiffer is a three-time letterwinner for the Golden Gopher gymnastics team. He specializes soley on the still rings where his best score of the season was a 9.15 vs. Michigan State and vs. Illinois-Chicago.
Three women's cross country athletes, juniors Aimee Daugs, Minna Haronoja and Hayley Singer, received the Women's Athletics Top Five Award. Other winners were senior tennis player Jana Hrdinova, who earned the award for the second time, and senior Krissy Berglund from the swimming and diving team.
Daugs, majoring in political science, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.87. She studied in Venezuela for five months and worked as an intern in Senator Paul Wellstone's office. Daugs plans to enter the Peace Corps after graduation.
Haronoja is majoring in international relations and has a cumulative GPA of 3.86. She has been named to the CLA Dean's List seven times. She is ranked No. 7 in the Big Ten in the 3,000 meters.
Hrdinova earned the award for the second time. She has been named to the CLA Dean's List every quarter she has been at Minnesota and has recorded a 4.0 grade point average seven quarters. She is a two-time Academic All- Big Ten selection. She finished her career with a 61-47 singles record and 55-51 doubles record.
Berglund, a member of the Big Ten Champion women's swimming and diving team, has a 3.96 GPA and is majoring in accounting. She has earned a 4.0 in her major classes and completed 10 quarters and one summer session with a 4.0 GPA. After graduation, Berglund will work for PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Singer has a cumulative GPA of 3.82 while majoring in political science. She has been named to the CLA Dean's List every quarter of her enrollment. She earned an internship with the Washington D.C. Corporation Council last summer.
