WRESTLING TEAM SIGNS FIVE TOP RECRUITS

VoThe University of Minnesota wrestling team announced the signing of five top recruits to join the Golden Gophers in the 1999-2000 wrestling season. Ryan Lewis, Shaun Williams, Trent Hatlevig, Jacob Volkman and Desmond Radunz comprise the wrestling recruting class. They will join Damion Hahn, who signed in November.

Lewis, from Vernal, Utah, will transfer from North Dakota State where he wrestled in 1998-99. At the 1999 NCAA Division II AA Wrestling Championships, Lewis placed third at 125 pounds. He was also the National High School Champion in 1998. He will wrestle at 133 pounds.

Williams will transfer to Minnesota from North Idaho Junior College. In 1998, Williams was the runner-up at the NJCAA Championships at 125 pounds. Last season he was the NJCAA 125-pound champion.

The other three wrestlers hail from Minnesota. Hatlevig, a native of Caledonia, Minn., was a two-time Minnesota state high school champion. He will wrestle at 141 pounds. Volkman, of Battle Lake, Minn., will wrestle at 157 pounds for Minnesota. He was a three- time Minnesota state champion. Finally, Radunz will wrestle at 125 pounds for the Golden Gophers. Radunz, of Henry Sibley, Minn., was the 1999 Minnesota state champion.
