SPARTANS RALLY TO DEFEAT GOPHERS IN SOFTBALL, 4-3

Michigan State rallied from a 3-0 deficit with four fourth-inning runs and defeated Minnesota 4-3 in the final game of a three-game series at Old College Field. The Spartans tied Minnesota in the Big Ten standings with a 12-7 record. Minnesota is 39-17 overall, while Michigan State is 38-18 overall.

The Gophers took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Angel Braden's third home run of the season. Minnesota extended the lead to 3-0 with a two-out, two-run rally in the third inning. Tammi Hays and Shannon Beeler hit back-to-back doubles, with Hays scoring on Beeler's hit. Braden followed with a single to left field to score Beeler.

Michigan State loaded the bases with two out in the fourth inning. Carrie Carpenter was hit by a pitch, forcing in the Spartans' first run. Carrie Fry followed with a two-run single to tie the game and Carpenter scored the go-ahead run when the throw to the infield bounced away.

The Gophers will host Iowa in a Big Ten doubleheader Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Bierman Softball Complex.
