GOPHERS OUSTED IN NCAA BASEBALL TOURNAMENT BY BAYLOR, 22-6

The Golden Gopher baseball team fell to the Baylor Bears by a score of 22-6 Sunday at the 1999 NCAA Baseball Tournament in Waco, Texas. The loss eliminated Minnesota from the tournament while the win for Baylor sends them to the super regional to be held next weekend.

The Baylor Bears struck early and often pounding out a total of 29 hits against the Golden Gopher pitchers. Baylor opened the game with one run in the first. But Minnesota scored three in the bottom half of the inning to take their only lead of the game. In the top of the second, the Bears responded with four runs to make the score 5-3.

Minnesota added a run in the bottom half of the second to make the score 5-4 after two. But Baylor would go on to outscore Minnesota by a 16-1 margin after the third inning, posting runs in all innings except for the fifth.

Seniors Robb Quinlan and Aron Amundson and juniors Mike Arlt and Matt Scanlon were named to the All-Tournament Team for their performances this weekend.

Minnesota finishes their season with a record of 46-18. The 46 wins by the Golden Gophers this season is a team record for wins in a season.
