tMILWAUKEE, Wis. - Minnesota scored three times in the opening 27 minutes and then held off host Wisconsin- Milwaukee for a 3-2 victory in the season-opener for both teams.

The Gophers jumped out to a quick lead when Laurie Seidl scored on a rebound off an Erin Holland free kick at 11:36. Seidl then helped set up Minnesota's second goal as she sent in a deep ball that Liz Wagner passed to Nicole Lee, who flicked the ball in the net at 21:45.

Megan Johnson scored on a long header off a Jaime O'Gara pass at the 26:08 mark and the Gophers appeared to be cruising to an easy win. But Stephanie Hosni scored with 49 seconds left in the opening half and Julie Ruma, who assisted on that goal, scored in the 64th minute to cut the lead to 3-2.

Minnesota had a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 5-2 edge in corner kicks. Both Dana Larson, who earned the win, and Julie Eibensteiner, who relieved her with 18 minutes to play, made two saves, while the Panthers' Elizabeth Ulicki had six saves.

Minnesota opens the home portion of its 1999 season Saturday, Sept. 4, when the Gophers face Arizona State at the Minnesota Soccer Stadium beginning at 7 p.m.

Quotes from head coach Sue Montagne

"Our play in the first half was great. We attacked and put them on their heels. The three goals we got were all beautiful.
