anUniversity of Minnesota women's athletics director Chris Voelz announced today the hiring of Melissa Arthur as the new women's golf coach. Arthur, the former assistant golf coach for both the men's and women's teams at Washington State University, will begin her duties August 9.

A graduate of Iowa State University, Arthur left in 1995 as one of the most decorated golfers in Cyclone history. In the following year, she served as the assistant golf professional at Eagle Pointe Golf & Tennis Resort in Bloomington, Ind., while also serving as a local high school boys' golf coach. Arthur has served as the assistant men's and women's coach at Washington State since August of 1997. During her two years, she spent a four-month period as the interim head coach from March to July of 1998.

"Melissa brings to Minnesota a love for her native Midwest, a successful recruiting record in Division I, and experience as a head coach in a competitive Pacific- 10 Conference. This, plus her abounding enthusiasm, eagerness, and work ethic make her a wonderful fit for the University of Minnesota," said Voelz.

In her college career, Arthur was a two-time All-Big Eight Conference selection during her junior and senior years. Arthur was named a pre-season honorable mention All-American by GolfWeek Magazine and earned first-team All-Midwest District accolades in her final season at Iowa State.

"I am very excited about the opportunity to become the women's golf coach at the University of Minnesota. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity, but I accept the challenge of maintaining a top college program. I feel that I can enhance the image of the golf program by recruiting the top student-athletes in the state of Minnesota and the Midwest," said Arthur.
