WOMEN'S GOLF WINS MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL

eThe 1999 Minnesota Invitational ended in a playoff for both the team title and individual title. Host Minnesota won a one-hole playoff with Eastern Michigan, while Eastern Michigan's Stephanie Smoot earned medalist honors after outlasting Minnesota's Megan Stier in six sudden-death playoff holes.

Minnesota erased a seven-shot deficit in the final round, forcing a playoff with Eastern Michigan. The two teams were tied after the first round of 18 holes on Saturday before Eastern Michigan recorded a 310 in the second round to Minnesota's 317. But Minnesota rebounded with a round of 316 on Sunday, while Eastern Michigan shot 323, tying the team race at 948. The Golden Gophers won the team title on a one-hole playoff.

In the individual race, Smoot and Stier, who competed as an individual, were tied at 149 going into the final round of competition. Both shot 77 on Sunday to end the tournament at 226 and force a playoff. The two battled through six sudden-death playoff holes before Smoot birdied the par-5 No. 18 to earn the individual title.

Minnesota's Beth Hollatz, competing as an individual, was the only player to score par in a round during the tournament. Hollatz scored a 72 in Sunday's final round and finished at 228. Northern Iowa's Karla Schuldt was three behind at 231, while Ashley Wilkerson of Oral Roberts placed fifth at 234.

Minnesota freshman Karyn Stordahl was the top team finisher for the Gophers, placing sixth at 235. Junior Katie Bakken tied for ninth at 239, while sophomore Kristin Dooley was 15th (242) and Cindy Cannon tied for 16th (243).

Eastern Michigan's scorers all placed in the top 25. Smoot led the way with her first-place finish at 226, followed by Devon Beveridge, seventh at 236. Rounding out the scoring for Eastern Michigan were Jasreen Nirmal (19th, 244) and Kristee Wright (23rd, 245).

Two Idaho golfers scored eagles on Sunday. Trisha Einsphar scored a 3 on the par-5 18th, while Nicole Keller scored a 3 on the par-5 13th.

Oral Roberts placed third in the team standings at 950, while Idaho was right behind at 951. Northern Iowa placed fifth at 967.
