GOPHERS WIN DIET COKE CLASSIC BY SWEEPING NAVY

The Minnesota volleyball team defeated Navy in three games, 15-5, 15-4, 15-4, to win the Diet Coke Classic on Saturday night at the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers went 3-0 in the tournament and improve their overall season record to 9-3.

Gopher setter Lindsey Berg was named the tournament's most valuable player after leading Minnesota to a .389 team hitting percentage against Navy and serving three aces. Teammates Nicole Branagh and Linda Shudlick joined Berg on the all-tournament team.

Yvonne Wichert led Minnesota with 12 kills against the Mids, while the defense held Navy to a -.090 hitting percentage. Gopher middle blocker Charnette Fair added 11 kills and five blocks.

Earlier in the day, Minnesota topped Denver in four games, 15-3, 15-3, 16-18, 15-5. Branagh paced Minnesota with 19 kills, eight in the match's final game. Shudlick contributed 13 kills at a .611 hitting percentage.

Minnesota will begin Big Ten play against 13th-ranked Wisconsin on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
