GOLDEN GOPHERS 11th AFTER ONE ROUND OF NCAA PREVIEW

Freshman Wilhelm Schauman of Djursholm, Sweden led the Golden Gophers in the first day, firing a one-over par 73 which included a four-under par total of 32 on the front nine. Schauman is tied for 27th place overall individually.
Clemson leads the team portion of the event, as the Tigers opened a six-shot lead with a nine-under par total of 279. Defending NCAA champion Georgia and Northwestern are in second place. Arizona State is in fourth place, 10 shots off the pace.
Bubba Watson of Georgia set the pace individually, carding a five-under par score of 67. Defending NCAA individual champion Luke Donald of Northwestern and D.J. Trahan of Clemson are one shot back after each firing scores of four-under par 68.
The tournament features 18 teams, all of which are ranked in the Golfweek preseason top 25. To qualify for the event, a team must finish in the top 15 in the nation at the previous year's NCAA Championships, be one of two wild-card selections, or be the host school. The Golden Gophers placed 11th at the 1999 NCAA Championships.
The tournament continues with 18 holes of play Monday and concludes with the final 18 holes on Tuesday morning.
