GOPHER GOLFERS TO HOST THE MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL

Saturday-SundGOLDEN GOPHER GOLFERS HOST MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL - The University of Minnesota women's golf team opens its season by hosting the Minnesota Invitational at the Les Bolstad Golf Course on Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 11-12. Teams from Creighton, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Washington, Grand Valley State, Idaho, Loyola, Northern Iowa, Truman State and Missouri-Kansas State, as well as individual competitors, will join the Golden Gophers on the 72-par, 5,939-yard course. Competition begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday (36 holes) and 9 a.m. on Sunday (18 holes).

The Minnesota Invitational is part of the 1999-2000 Rolex Collegiate Tour, which is administered by the College Golf Foundation and includes nearly 100 women's national and regional collegiate golf tournaments from across the country.

LAST YEAR AT THE MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL - Minnesota split its team for competition, with the maroon squad designated as the varsity team whose finish would count in the final standings. The Gophers' gold squad would not be eligible in team standings but could compete as individuals. While Minnesota's maroon squad officially placed third with a team score of 633, the gold squad bettered their teammates by seven strokes, tallying an unofficial score of 626.

Jenny Bruun (Crookston, Minn./Central), a Gopher playing on an individual basis, was the top Minnesota finisher, placing third with a 36-hold score of 151. She hit a 1-over-par 75 in the final round.

Southern Illinois golfers captured medalist and runner-up honors in leading the team to the invitational title. Southern Illinois posted a team score of 619, followed by Southwest Missouri State at 624. Alison Hiller placed first with a score of 148, followed by teammate Andrea Walker at 150.

THE COACH -Melissa Arthur begins her first season as head coach at the University of Minnesota. Arthur is the former assistant golf coach for both the men's and women's teams at Washington State University. She was a two-time All-Big Eight Conference selection at Iowa State and earned first-team All-Midwest District accolades her senior season.
