1/13/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball

IowaIowa used a 16-2 run midway through the first half to build a double-digit lead and never looked back in defeating the Golden Gophers in Big Ten Conference women's basketball action in Iowa City, Iowa on Thursday. Minnesota, losers of its last four games, falls to 7-8 overall and 1-4 in Big Ten play.

After a Cassie VanderHeyden jumper brought Minnesota to within one at 11-10 with 13:56 left in the half, Hawkeye guard Cara Consuegra hit a three-pointer to begin the outburst. Moneeke Bowden, who went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line, stopped the streak momentarily with two charity tosses, but Iowa ran off the next nine points to take a 15-point advantage with just under eight minutes to play before intermission.

The Gophers turned the ball over 16 times in the half as the Hawkeyes used a 64 percent field goal percentage to take a commanding 46-24 lead at halftime.

Minnesota's offensive woes continued in the second half. The Gophers struggled to score, shooting just 25 percent in the second half to finish at 29 percent for the game. From three-point range, Minnesota shot 18 percent on 3-of-17 from behind the arc.

Taking game scoring honors was Iowa guard Lindsay Meder, the second-leading scorer in the Big Ten, who collected 20 points. Meder scored Iowa's first seven points of the second half as the Hawkeyes build as big as a 34-point lead late in the game. Consuegra added 19 points, six assists and four steals.

VanderHeyden led three Gophers in double figures with 13 points. Bowden finished with 11 and Erin Olson chipped in 10.

Minnesota's next action is Sunday, Jan. 16, when the Gophers travel to play defending national champion Purdue.
