A key sequence of the outcome occurred at the 2 minute mark. Erin Olson pulled the Gophers to within one point at 42-41 after converting the first of two free throws. She missed the second but Brandy Pickens grabbed the rebound and was fouled. Pickens missed the front end of the one-and-one and Northwestern captured the rebound. Wildcat guard Dana Leonard drilled a huge three-pointer from the left wing in the ensuing possession to give the Wildcats a 45-41 lead.
Northwestern hit 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to build a seven-point lead at 48-41 with 52 seconds left to play. The Gophers closed the gap with a Moneeke Bowden three-pointer with 14 ticks left on the clock, but Emily Butler sealed the win for the Wildcats with a breakaway layup.
The story at the free throw line ended with Northwestern hitting 13-of-19 attempts. Minnesota was just 4-of-7.
Olson was the only Gopher in double figures with 11 points. Northwestern's Butler and Leonard shared game scoring honors with 12 points a piece.
Despite the loss, Minnesota set a new Sports Pavilion record with nine blocks. Kim Bell and Kim Prince each contributed three blocks to the record.
Minnesota's next game is Sunday, when the Gophers host Indiana-Purdue in a non-conference contest at 2 p.m.
