The victory snapped a six-game losing streak for the Gophers and improved their record to 8-10 on the season. Minnesota has not compiled eight wins in a season since the 1994-95 season.
VanderHeyden hit 4-of-6 three-point field goal attempts in the first half to lift the Gophers to a 38-29 halftime lead. The Gophers held the Jaguars scoreless in the final 2:31 on the half, expanding a 30-29 lead to the nine-point cushion at intermission. Forward Jackie Tate came off the bench to hit 4-of-4 free throws during the stretch.
In the second half, Minnesota shot a blistering 67 percent from the field as Indiana-Purdue (6-11) was able to crack the double-digit lead to single figures twice. Indiana-Purdue used two Barb Nelson free throws to close to within 48-40 with 10:59 remaining but Kim Prince hit a pair of jumpers to put the Gopher lead back to double figures for good.
Four Gophers joined VanderHeyden in double figures scoring as Minnesota tallied its highest point total of the season. Moneeke Bowden chipped in 12 points, Erin Olson and Prince added 11 and Tate 10. Olson also contributed nine assists in 38 minutes of play, while committing just one turnover. The Gophers as a team turned the ball over a season-low 12 times.
Minnesota finished the game at 54 percent for the floor (27-50) and 80 percent from the free throw line (20-25).
Minnesota's next action is Thursday, Jan. 27, when the Gophers host defending national champion Purdue at 7 p.m. in the Sports Pavilion.
