BIG SECOND HALF LIFTS OHIO STATE OVER GOPHER WOMEN
1/6/2000 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
The Golden Gophers (7-6, 1-2) shot 50 percent in the first half (9-18) to build a 21-16 halftime lead. A Brandy Pickens layup with 16:10 to play gave Minnesota its biggest lead of the contest, 10 points, at 28-18.
Then in a game in which nothing seems to go their way, the Buckeyes (8-5, 1-2) rattled off 19 straight points over the next six minutes to take a 37-28 lead. Sophomore Lauren Shenk scored nine of her 15 points in the rally, the final tally on a three-pointer from the right corner with 7:53 on the clock.
Ohio State built a 13-point lead before Minnesota chipped its way back into the game. Two free throws by forward Kim Prince at the 1:57 mark cut the margin to five but the Gophers could get no closer.
Prince came off the bench to lead the Gophers in scoring with a career high 17 points. She also tallied a career best with nine rebounds as the Gophers compiled a 42-25 advantage on the boards.
A pressure Ohio State defense forced 30 Gopher turnovers and limited the Big Ten's top three-point shooting team to a 2-for-10 night from behind the arc.
The Gophers' next action is Monday, Jan. 10 against No. 6 Penn State at the Sports Pavilion.
