GOLDEN GOPHERS DEFEAT BEMIDJI STATE 9-3

croMinnesota defeated Bemidji State 9-3 in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on Saturday night as seven different Golden Gophers scored a goal. The game was played in front of a capacity crowd of 2,358 in the John S. Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn.

Bemidji State wasted no time jumping on the Golden Gophers as Scott Dickson scored just 35 seconds into the game. Minnesota finally got on the board at the 6:18 mark of the first period as Bemidji, Minn., native Matt DeMarchi scored his first goal of the season.

Minnesota added two more goals from Grant Potulny and Erik Westrum as the Golden Gophers took a 3-1 lead after one period. Minnesota outshot the Beavers 24-5 in the first twenty minutes.

The Golden Gophers increased the lead to 5-1 with a pair of goals just 58 seconds apart from Ben Tharp and Troy Riddle in the second. For Tharp, it was his first career goal.

In third period, Minnesota continued the scoring spree as Aaron Miskovich tallied a short-handed goal, the eighth of his career, while Jordan Leopold added his first goal of the year.

Potulny and Riddle closed out the scoring with their second goals of the game in the final two minutes of the contest.

For the game, Minnesota outshot the Beavers 54-16, the second consecutive week the Golden Gophers have held an opponent under 20 shots in a game.

Adam Hauser picked up his second win of the year as he stopped 13-of-16 shots.

Westrum established career highs in the game with four assists and five points, while Leopold collected a goal and three assists.
