BulldSenior captain Erik Westrum scored a pair of goals as Minnesota outlasted UMD 3-1 in the WCHA opener for both schools. The Golden Gophers held the Bulldogs to just 13 shots en route to the victory at Mariucci Arena.

Minnesota jumped on top quickly as Westrum scored at the 1:57 mark of the first period on the power play. Jordan Leopold and John Pohl assisted on the goal.

The Bulldogs responded in the first period at 7:50 as Derek Derow beat goalie Adam Hauser to knot the game at one.

Following a scoreless second period, Minnesota moved ahead for good as Jeff Taffe found the back of the net as the Golden Gophers were on the power play with a two-man advantage. The goal at the 8:37 mark would prove to be the difference.

With less than a minute to play, Westrum added an empty net goal and in the process, collected his third straight multiple point game and his second two-goal outing of the season.

Minnesota (3-0-0, 1-0-0) and UMD (0-1-0, 0-1-0) will meet again on Saturday night at Mariucci Arena. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
