MINNESOTA ROUTS UMD 9-2 TO SWEEP WCHA OPENER

10/21/2000 12:00:00 AM | Athletics

Minnesota led 2-0 after one period as Troy Riddle and Ben Tharp scored on even-strength goals. For Tharp, it was the second goal of his career and second in as many weeks.

The Golden Gophers broke the game open in the second with four goals in an eight minute span. Nick Angell, Matt Koalska, John Pohl and Jordan Leopold all scored in the period to give Minnesota a 6-0 lead heading into the final period.

UMD finally got on the board at the 1:42 mark as Andy Reierson beat goalie Adam Hauser. The Golden Gophers responded with Aaron Miskovich's power-play goal just 1:02 later. Matt Leimbek and Erik Wendell closed out the Minnesota scoring.

Hauser stopped 26-of-28 shots to claim his fourth consecutive victory. As a team, the 4-0-0 start is the best since the 1994-95 season.

Minnesota will host Alaska-Anchorage next weekend at Mariucci Arena.
