MEN'S SWIMMING WINS DUALS AGAINST NORTHWESTERN AND INDIANA

GophersThe University of Minnesota's men's swimming and diving team won duals against Northwestern and Indiana today in Evanston, Ill. Minnesota beat the host 80-60 and Indiana 91-49.

The Golden Gophers won nine of the 16 events. Freshman Justin Mortimer and sophomores Todd Smolinski and Jeff Hackler each won two events. Mortimer won the 1000 freestyle with a time of nine minutes and 16.85 seconds and the 500 free with a time 4:33.49. Smolinski won the 100 backstroke with a 49.15 and the 200 back with a 1:49.71. Hackler won both the 100 and 200 breaststroke events with times of 56.99 and 2:03.14, respectively. The other three event winners were the 200 medley relay (Smolinski, Hackler, Chad Krastins and Atwood), Krastins in the 100 butterfly and Dan Croaston in three-meter diving.

Minnesota's next meet is Nov. 3 and 4 against North Carolina and South Carolina in Chapel Hill , N.C. Complete Minnesota results and the event winners from today's meet follow.
