GOPHER ROWING TEAM TO OPEN SEASON

Minnesota has its first competition of the 2000-01 season on Saturday at the Head of the Mississippi Regatta, hosted by the Minneapolis Rowing Club. The event begins at 9 a.m. Minnesota will compete in the Women's Open 8+ at 11 a.m. and in the Women's Open 4+ at 2:40 p.m. There will be a boat dedication at 3 p.m. at the University's River Flats. This is Minnesota's only fall competition in the state of Minnesota.
Head Coach Wendy Davis
Wendy Davis is in her first year as head coach at Minnesota. Davis was the head coach at Yale from 1993- 97, leading the Bulldog women's team to a top-five national ranking in each of her four years with the program. Her squad finished fifth at the first NCAA Rowing Championships in 1997, while her varsity eight placed second at the Collegiate National Championships in 1994. Davis spent 10 years at Stanford, beginning as the novice coach from 1983-91 before being promoted and serving as the head women's rowing coach from 1991-93. Davis led the Cardinal to a second-place varsity eight finish at the Pacific Coast Championships in 1992 and a fourth-place showing in 1993. She competed in collegiate rowing at UCLA, a member of the Bruin women's four that placed second at the Collegiate National Championships in 1981 and sixth in 1980.
