GOPHER WOMEN SECOND AT MIDWEST REGIONAL, EARN AUTOMATIC NCAA BERTH

Eighth-ranked Kansas State won the meet with 61 points, behind a 1-2 finish by Amy Mortimer and Korene Hinds. Minnesota scored 84 points to place second, well ahead of third-place Missouri's 124 points.
For the first time in school history, the Gophers placed three runners in the top 10 at the regional meet. Frosh Darja Vasiljeva led Minnesota by placing third in a career-best time of 20 minutes, 54 seconds, 20 seconds behind Mortimer's winning time of 20:34.
Senior Elaine Eggleston and Corinne Nimtz finished one second apart to place ninth and 10th. Eggleston earned all-region honors for the third consecutive year by turning in a time of 21:09 with Nimtz following on her heels.
Sophomore Anita Menden was Minnesota's fourth runner, finishing 29th in 21:45 while Victoria Moses rounded out the Gophers' scoring by placing 33rd in 21:55.
The top two teams in each of nine regions automatically qualify for the NCAA Championship. Minnesota will take part in the NCAA meet for the fourth consecutive year when Iowa State hosts the event Nov. 20. The women's race gets underway at 11 a.m.
