The Club TTT team from Riga, Latvia, provided the Golden Gopher women's basketball team with an excellent challenge defeating Minnesota, 79-70, in an exhibition game at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday.

The Gophers faced a 50-36 halftime deficit after Club TTT guard Ilze Ievina lit up the scoreboard with 24 first-half points. Club TTT hit nine of 14 three-point field goals in the opening period.

The Gopher defense stiffened in the second half, allowing Ievina just five points and chipping away at Club TTT's double-digit lead. Two Lindsay Whalen free throws with 4:57 remaining brought the Gophers to within five points at 70-65. Club TTT answered with four points and the Gophers could not get closer than six points the rest of the way.

Minnesota hampered its comeback effort by hitting on just 15 of 26 free throws in the second half and 22 of 37 for the game.

Tanisha Gilbert led the Gophers with 17 points and eight rebounds. Whalen added 15 points and five assists, while Kadidja Andersson came off the bench to score 10 points.

The Gophers open their regular season next weekend, Nov. 18-19, when they host the Sheraton Four Points Classic.
