GOLDEN GOPHERS LEAVE GRAND FORKS IN FIRST PLACE IN WCHA

Minnesota jumped ahead early when Grand Forks, N.D., native Grant Potulny beat UND goaltender Karl Goehring on the power-play. The 1- 0 lead would hold until the 7:25 mark of the second period when Trevor Hammer scored for the Fighting Sioux. After another UND goal, Jeff Taffe knotted the game at two with his goal from Pat O'Leary.
In a third-period shootout, the Golden Gophers connected again on the power-play as Troy Riddle< /a> scored from Taffe. The Fighting Sioux then scored a pair of goals to take a 4-3 lead. Senior Matt Leimbek scored Minnesota's third power-play goal on the night and the two teams were again tied.
With less than seven minutes to play, Kevin Spiewak gave UND a 5-4 lead with his power-play goal. Leopold then went to work just two minutes later and beat Goehring top shelf. The two teams played a scoreless overtime period.
Junior Adam Hauser stopped 28 shots on the night, including all three he faced in the extra period.
Minnesota played the game without the services of five regulars due to injury, including two of the team's top five defensemen. Sophomore Chad Roberg and freshman Joey Martin made their collegiate debuts as Minnesota skated with just 11 forwards.
Minnesota will travel to St. Cloud State on Friday night and return to Mariucci on Saturday for the rematch with the Huskies.
