The Minnesota softball team has signed Christina Zimmerman (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands) to a National Letter of Intent. Zimmerman, who will be the Golden Gophers' only signee during the early signing period, will begin her career at the University of Minnesota in the fall of 2001.

Zimmerman is an outfielder, but the Minnesota coaching staff believes that she could play positions in the infield as well as the outfield. She was a second-team all-district outfielder at The Woodlands High School in the 2000 season. She also won the "Heart Award" from her team. Zimmerman also has softball experience with the Texas Elite and Houston Power Red summer softball teams. She plans to play with the Texas Blast in the summer of 2001.

"Christine will bring a lot of intensity and desire to the Minnesota softball program," said Minnesota co-head coach Julie Standering. "She is a leader both on and off the field. Speed, execeptional gane instincts, and a rocket of an arm are characteristics that only begin to describe this outstanding athlete."

The Minnesota softball team has posted five consecutive winning seasons, including a 31-28 record in 2000. The Golden Gophers will open the 2001 season by hosting the Metrodome Softball Classic on February 8.
