Head track and field coach Phil Lundin announced the signing of three athletes that will join the Golden Gopher squad for the 2002 season. Karl Erickson, Ryan Malmin and Rob Merritt are all Minnesota athletes that will add a lot to the University's track and field program.
Erickson, from Rochester, Minn., won both the shot put and the discus for Century High School at last year's state meet. He is currently the seventh ranked returning shot put athlete in the country.
Malmin is the top cross country runner in Minnesota. He has clocked a 4:26.8 mile time for Hopkins High School.
Merritt, a teammate of Malmin's at Hopkins High School, is the top returning sprinter in Minnesota.
"We are excited about all three of these athletes," head coach Phil Lundin said. "They are very talented and will be assets to this team."
