MINNESOTA'S GOLDEN BIG TEN HISTORY
Between the men and women, the University of Minnesota track and field team has combined produced 102 outdoor conference champions since 2000. Minnesota's women last won the team title in 2024 when the team scored 131 points while the men's program last won in 2010. In school history Minnesota's women have collected four team conference championships while the men have earned seven.
A season ago Minnesota set three different Big Ten Outdoor Championships meet records at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. Anthonett Nabwe's 69.85m (229-2) broke the women's hammer throw record that had stood since 2021 while eventual 2025 NCAA Champion Kostas Zaltos set the men's hammer throw record with his 77.67m (254-10). The third conference meet record was set by the men's 4x100m relay team of Zion Campbell, Kion Benjamin, Aaron Charles and Devin Augustine. The quartet clocked a time of 38.54 to break the previous record from 2023 (38.87), which was also held by Minnesota.
GOPHERS TO WATCH
As of May 12, the Maroon and Gold have a total of 18 events across the men's and women's teams that rank inside the conference's top five this season. Five of those 18 events come into the conference championships at the No. 1 position.
Anthonett Nabwe is the lone Gopher with two No. 1 conference rankings with her 77.64m (254-9) hammer throw from the 116th Drake Relays and her 59.58m (195-6) in the discus from the Battle on the Bayou. Ali Weimer is the other Golden Gopher woman ranked No. 1 in the conference this season with her 5000m time of 15:31.13 at the Bryan Clay Invitational. Minnesota's men have two No. 1 ranked individuals heading into Big Tens with Hakeem Ford in the triple jump and Emmett Gerres in the 3000m steeplechase. Ford's 16.33m (53-7) came at LSU's Battle on the Bayou while Gerres' steeplechase time of 8:32.56 came from the Raleigh Relays back in March.
THE MAROON AND GOLD IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Maroon and Gold men and women were both ranked inside the USTFCCCA's latest outdoor track and field rankings. The men came in at No. 15 nationally while the women were 23rd.
In the event squad rankings Minnesota's depth on the women's side shows in the women's hammer throw where they are the top-ranked quartet in the NCAA with an average of 65.18m (213-10). The women's team also has the 10th-ranked 400m hurdles group with Kennedy Martinson's 57.63 leading the way. The men's highest-rated Event Squad is the hammer throw at No. 2, with an average of 69.32m (227-5). Minnesota's men sit at the No. 5 spot nationally in both the 100m and the 200m with John Caleb (10.00) and Zion Campbell (20.49) leading the way in those two events. Additionally the 3000m steeplechase quartet of Emmett Gerres, Sam Scott, Nolan Sutter and Owen Lindseth are No. 8 in the nation with an average of 8:56.03.
STREIT EARNS FIRST BIG TEN WEEKLY HONOR
For the first time redshirt junior Hadley Streit was tabbed as the Big Ten's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on May 6. The recognition is the seventh for the program between the indoor and outdoor campaigns in 2025-26.
The weekly honor for Streit is the first of her impressive career with the Maroon and Gold. Streit's honor comes after the Gopher claimed the Torrin Lawrence Memorial women's hammer throw win with a toss of 69.72m (228-9). Streit's winning throw was the best in the NCAA during that weekend of competition and gave the Saint Paul, Minn., native her second victory of the season (116th Drake Relays). Overall this season Streit holds a season-best of 71.98m (236-2) from the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Fla. At 71.98m (236-2) Streit is ranked No. 3 in the NCAA this season and No. 2 all-time in Big Ten history just behind teammate Anthonett Nabwe. Between indoor and outdoor Minnesota's seven weekly conference honors have been won by Streit, Nabwe (five times) and Zeal Kuku (one time).
NABWE APPEARS ON SECOND 'THE BOWERMAN' WATCH LIST
University of Minnesota women's track and field redshirt junior Anthonett Nabwe was recognized as one of 10 student-athletes on the Women's 2026 Update No. 4 Watch List for The Bowerman, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on April 29. The appearance on The Bowerman Watch List is Nabwe's second straight after appearing on it for the first time on March 25.
The award considers athletes' performances during the NCAA indoor track & field and outdoor track & field seasons. Nabwe is the first Gopher since 2010 (Alicia Rue) to be named to any 'The Bowerman' Watch List. Her hammer throw of 77.64m (254-9) came just three centimeters short of the NCAA all-time record in the women's hammer throw in Des Moines last week. Nabwe's Drake Relays throw makes her, as of April 27, the 12th-best performer in the women's hammer throw in world history (all levels), per the IAAF. Nabwe has set both the indoor weight throw Big Ten record and the outdoor hammer throw conference record this season. In March she made history at the NCAA Indoor Championships becoming the weight throw national champion with a toss of 25.13m (82-5 1/2) in Fayetteville, Ark., at Randal Tyson Track Center. The two-time Big Ten weight throw champion became the second Gopher to win an NCAA title in the weight throw, joining Kaitlyn Long in 2018. Nabwe's weight throw at NCAAs moved her to No. 3 all-time in the event, and was the best throw by a collegiate woman since 2022 (Shey Taiwo, Ole Miss).
