GOLDEN GOPHER BASKETBALL SNEAKS PAST GEORGIA

aheThe University of Minnesota Golden Gophers improved to a 2-0 record with a breathtaking win over the Georgia Bulldogs at Williams Arena. The Gophers were behind most of the second half, but pulled ahead on a layup by senior John- Blair Bickerstaff with 11 seconds to go.

Minnesota went on an 11-4 run to start the game. They were able to hold on to the lead for most of the first half. Georgia tied the game with 9:09 to go in the half, and it remained close from that point on. Georgia had many chances to pull far ahead of Minnesota, as they outrebounded the Gophers 27-16 in the first half. 14 of those rebounds were offensive, but the Bulldogs were not able to convert them into points. The Gophers went into the lockerroom behind 27-28 at the half.

There were six lead changes in the first seven minutes of the second half. The Bulldogs regained the lead at 53-51 with 12:33 remaining and held on until Bickerstaff's shot with 11 seconds to go. The layup gave the Gophers a 75-74 lead. Minnesota never gave Georgia another scoring chance after that, but added two more points of their own on free throws by sophomore Shance Schilling.

Georgia's D.A. Layne led all scorers with 27 points, but Bickerstaff was the star of the game. He hit the winning basket, was a perfect 8-8 from the field and had nine rebounds. Freshamn Michael Bauer was Minnesota's high scorer with 21 points. Georgia's Shon Coleman was the high rebounder for the game with 11.

Minnesota leaves Tuesday for the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. They face the host team on Friday.
