GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS COMPETE AT KAUFMAN-BRAND OPEN

consSeveral members of the Minnesota wrestling team competed in the Kaufman-Brand Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa, over the weekend. The Kaufman- Brand, hosted by the University of Nebraska-Omaha, has been considered the largest collegiate tournament in the nation.

Redshirt freshman Jacob Volkmann placed second at 174 pounds in the open division, losing 5-3 to Iowa's Gabe McMahan in the title match. Junior Matt Kraft took third place at 174 pounds with an 11-9 victory over Nathan Coy of Oregon State in the third place match. Sophomore Ryan Lewis captured fifth place at 133 pounds and had the most falls in the tournament - three in 4:23.

Several Golden Gophers also competed in the 20 & under division with some good results. Freshman Nate Baker defeated fellow freshman and teammate Tyler Marr 7-1 in the 157-pound championship match to grab the title. At 165 pounds, freshman Josh McLay took the title as Gaylen Taylor of Nebraska-Omaha defaulted. Freshman Eli Ross captured third place at 197 pounds, winning by default over Northern Iowa's Sean Stender.

Also competing in the 20 and under division were freshmen Jake Avre and Jake Larsen at 149 pounds, Casey Flaherty at 165 pounds and Drew Hageman at 184 pounds.
