GOPHER MEN, WOMEN WIN MINNESOTA INVITATIONAL

threeThe 16th-ranked Minnesota men and the 18th-ranked Minnesota women were both victorious Sunday at the Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center.

The men scored 997 points in the three-day meet, easily outdistancing second-place Wisconsin's 689 points. The women made a furious comeback on the final day, defeating the second-place Badgers by 107 points.

In the men's meet, the Gophers took the top four places in the 1650 freestyle, led by Justin Mortimer's time of 15:31.40. Jeff Hackler won the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:01.74 and Dan Croaston won platform diving with 524.60 points.

In the women's meet, seniors Emily Deppe and Ann Cahoy went 2-3 in the 200 backstroke to lead five Gophers in the top eight. Elizabeth Pierce finished third in the 200 breaststroke and Tracy LaVoi finished second in platform diving.

Both teams will resume their seasons after the Thanksgiving holidays, with the men travelling to Athens, Ga., and the Georgia Invitational, and the women heading to Austin, Texas, and the Texas Invitational. Both three-day meets begin Friday, Dec. 1.
