GOPHER WOMEN WIN FOUR POINTS SHERATON CLASSIC

The Golden Gophers (2-0) never trailed in the contest and built a 20-point advantage, 45-25, at halftime. The Friars dug themselves a hole by shooting just 15 percent (5-34) in the first half and 21 percent for the game (15-72). Minnesota made 10 more baskets than Providence, finishing the game at 39 percent (25-65).
The Gophers were led by freshman guard Lindsay Whalen, who led all scorers with 27 points and was named the Classic's most valuable player. Whalen also led the team with nine rebounds and four assists.
Sophomore guard Lindsay Lieser came off the bench to add 19 points, including 5-of-6 from three-point range. Freshman forward Kadidja Andersson chipped in 13 points and went a perfect 11-for-11 from the free throw line.
Joining Whalen on the all-tournament team from the Gophers was Andersson and sophomore guard Ozlem Piroglu.
The Gophers celebrate their first tournament crown in their early-season classic since 1993. Minnesota is also 2-0 on the season for the first time since the 1991-92 season.
