GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS WIN NINE TITLES AT NORTHERN OPEN

wrestlNine Golden Gopher wrestlers won titles and another 12 Maroon and Gold grapplers placed in the top eight at the Northern Open last week in River Falls, Wis. The tournament had 140 entries with wrestlers hailing from teams such as, Wisconsin, Iowa, Northern Iowa, Northwestern, Marquette, North Dakota State, St. Cloud State and Wisconsin-River Falls.

Junior Leroy Vega captured the 125-pound title, winning by a 12-3 decision over Tony Black of Wisconsin in the championship match. Freshman Eric Anderson</ a> placed seventh at 125 pounds. At 133 pounds, senior Brett Lawrence took the crown with a 5-3 decision over Kevin Black of Wisconsin. Sophomore Ryan Lewis placed fourth and junior Julio Alaniz took sixth at 133 pounds.

Junior Chad Erikson grabbed the 141-pound title with 12-2 major decision win over Wisconsin's Grant Hoerr in the title match. Redshirt freshman Trent Hatlevig finished fourth. At 149 pounds, sophomore Jared Lawrence took the title with a 15-5 major decision win over P.J. Dowling of Wisconsin. Freshman Jake Avre placed eighth

At 157 pounds, sophomore Luke Becker and freshman Nate Baker were named co-champs as they did not wrestle each other in the title match. Freshman Tyler Marr finished fourth at 157 pounds. At 165 pounds, senior Brad Pike lost to 2000 NCAA Champion Don Pritzlaff of Wisconsin 10-5 in the title match. Freshman Josh McLay took fourth place.

Junior Matt Kraft outdueled redshirt freshman Jacob Volkmann in the 174-pound title match, winning in sudden death overtime. At 184 pounds, redshirt freshman Damion Hahn captured the crown, defeating Steve Saxlund of North Dakota State 7-5 in the title match. Freshman Drew Hageman placed eighth.

Junior Owen Elzen took the 197-pound championship, pinning Sean Stender of Northern Iowa in the title match. Freshman Eli Ross took fifth place. Finally, in his first action of the year, redshirt freshman Garrett Lowney won the heavyweight title, defeating Justin Staebler of Wisconsin 7-4 in the championship match. Sophomore Mike Flanagan placed fourth.
