Texas Invitational Draws Top Teams
The Texas Invitational has the reputation of being one of the top intercollegiate meets in the country, and this weekend will be no exception. 11 of the 25 teams currently ranked in the CSCAA Top 25 will be participating in this meet, including four of the top five teams in the poll. The ranked teams are No. 1 UCLA, No. 3 Arizona, No. 4 Stanford, No. 5 California, No. 10 Texas, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Wisconsin, No. 14 SMU, No. 16 Arizona State, No. 18 Minnesota and No. 22 Nebraska. Arizona is the defending champion in the meet. Minnesota posted one of its best finishes of the 1999-2000 season at last year's meet, finishing second ahead of several nationally ranked teams.
Last Competition: Minnesota Wins Minnesota Invitational
Despite not winning any individual events or relays, Minnesota was victorious in the three-day Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center from Nov. 17-19. The Golden Gophers scored 944.5 points, defeating Division I foes Wisconsin (837.5), Kansas (643), Iowa (610) and Iowa State (537). Minnesota established team bests for the season in 11 individual events and three relays.
LaVoi Named Diver of the Week
Minnesota senior Tracy LaVoi (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) was named the Big Ten Diver of the Week on Nov. 21 for her performance at the Minnesota Invitational. LaVoi scored 49 points with a second place in platform diving and third-place finishes in 1-meter and 3-meter diving to help Minnesota win the Minnesota Invitational at the University Aquatic Center. LaVoi, who scored the Gophers' first diving point at the NCAA meet last season since 1997, has Minnesota's top marks in 3-meter diving and platform diving this season.
