GOPHER ROWERS END FALL SEASON AT PORTLAND

Minnesota ended its fall season at the Portland LO/OP (Lake Oswego to Oaks Park) Regatta of Champions in Portland, Ore. The University of Washington won the race in a time of 21 minutes, 47 seconds over the 7,000-meter course on the Willamette River. Oregon State was second in 22:40 and Cornell was third in 22:44. Minnesota's boat of Amber Riopel (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander), Beth Hornby (Winnipeg, Manitoba/ Kelvin), Erin Streff (Canby, Minn./Canby), Angela Hedin (Papillion, Neb./Papillion), Michelle Hass (Menomonie, Wis./Menomonie), Holly Pearson (Faribault, Minn./Faribault), Nina Palmer (Roseville, Minn./ Roseville Area), Katie Frankson (Fargo, N.D./Fargo South) and coxswain Libby Sharrow (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) placed fourth in 23:31.
The course was the longest on which Minnesota has competed. Fall regattas typically take place over approximately 5,000 meters.

The Golden Gophers won both the Open 8+ and the Open 4+ at the Head of the Mississippi Regatta, Minnesota's debut as a varsity rowing program. Minnesota competed at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, placing sixth in the Club 8+ race. The Golden Gophers also competed at the Head of the Iowa and the Portland Regatta of Champions during the fall season.
The novice team also got off to a good start, placing second in the Novice 8+ and fourth in the Novice 4+ at the Lemon Head Regatta in Bloomington, Ind.
Six student-athletes competed in all four varsity competitions during the fall season: Beth Hornby, Amber Riopel, Angela Hedin, Erin Streff, Nina Palmer and coxswain Libby Sharrow.
