With the score tied at 64, the Golden Gophers' Kadidja Andersson had her 12-foot jumper blocked by Irina Krasnoshiok with 16 seconds left to set up St. Joe's final possession.
Zampella never let the ball out of her hands as she drove left of the lane, brushed off a two-player screen and fired the game-winning shot, which bounced around the rim before falling in. Zampella finished with a game-high 23 points.
Minnesota (3-2) called a quick time out and set up a play with 0.06 seconds on the clock. Andersson caught Trish McGhee's inbound pass just over half court and fired a long shot and drew backboard but not rim.
The Gophers held the Hawks scoreless in a six-minute stretch in the first half to build a 16-6 lead with 9:20 left before intermission. The Minnesota lead evaporated as the Gophers hit just 4-of-13 shots and were whistled for five offensive fouls in the remainder of the half, resulting in a 29-22 St. Joe's lead at the half.
St. Joe's expanded its advantage to 12 points on a Zampella layup with 14:16 left in the game before Tanisha Gilbert fueled a Gopher comeback with consecutive layups off steals. Minnesota used a 23-8 run over the next nine minutes to take a 53-48 lead with 5:17 remaining. During the stretch, point guard Trish McGhee came off the bench and hit a pair of big three-point field goals.
Kim Prince led the Gophers with a career-high 22 points. Gilbert chipped in 15 points, also a career best, while Andersson added 10.
Minnesota shot an impressive 53 percent from the field and committed just 13 turnovers but shot a dreadful 30 percent from the free throw line, making just seven of 23 attempts.
The Gophers will play the loser of the Eastern Illnois/Kansas game in the consolation game of the tournament on Saturday.
