NO. 1 MINNESOTA WRESTLERS ROUT HOFSTRA 33-3

ninThe top-ranked University of Minnesota wrestling team routed 19th- ranked Hofstra University 33-3 in the first of three dual meets on Sunday for the Golden Gophers on the East Coast. Minnesota won nine of 10 matches at the dual meet with four Maroon and Gold wins coming by major decisions. With the win, the Golden Gophers moved their overall record to 3-0.

The meet opened at 165 pounds with third-ranked Brad Pike defeating No. 10 Noel Thompson by a 7-3 decision. At 174 pounds, junior Matt Kraft, a replacement for No. 14 John Hardy, jumped out to a 4-1 lead after one period and downed Rob Anspach with an 8-3 decision.

Second-ranked Damion Hahn began his homecoming trip with an 18-7 major decision victory over HU's Ralph Everett. Hahn is now 9-0 on the season. At 197 pounds, No. 9 Owen Elzen posted a technical fall on Matt Daddino, ending the match at 6:43 with the score at 21-6. With the win, Elzen improved to 10-0 on the year. Hofstra posted its only win of the day in the heavyweight match as Mike Eberle decisioned sophomore Mike Flanagan 3-1.

No. 3 Leroy Vega remained undefeated on the season with a 12-3 major decision of Tom Noto. At 133 pounds, ninth-ranked Brett Lawrence topped Anthony Riccardi with a 17-8 major decision. Riccardi was a late replacement for No. 3 Roman Fleszar, who is bothered by a pinched nerve in his neck. Sixth-ranked Chad Erikson kept the rout going at 141 pounds with his 8-7 win over seventh-ranked Jason DeBruin.

In the featured match of the day at 149 pounds, fifth-ranked Jared Lawrence improved to 10-0 on the year with a 3-2 decision of No. 3 Eric Schmiesing. Schmiesing, a St. Cloud, Minn., native suffered his first loss of the year. Lawrence lost to Schmiesing twice last season, including a loss in the NCAA Championships. At 157 pounds, No. 5 Luke Becker ended the meet with a 19-7 major decision triumph over No.15 Dennis Papadatos.

The Golden Gophers battle Princeton and Seton Hall tonight at Lakewood (N.J.) High School at 6:30 and 8 p.m., respectively.
