GILBERT LEADS GOPHER WOMEN TO VICTORY

STanisha Gilbert tallied a double-double to lead the Minnesota women's basketball team to a 77-71 victory over St. Louis University, in St. Louis on Sunday. The Golden Gophers improve their record to 6-3 on the season, while the Billikens fall to 5-2.

Gilbert hit 8-of-10 from the floor to score a career-high 20 points. She also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort. She was one of four Gophers to score in double digits with Kim Prince adding 17, Lindsay Whalen wit 14 and Ozlem Piroglu with 13.

The Gophers held a 32-29 halftime lead and started the second half with a 13-6 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 45-35 on a Kadidja Andersson jumper with 15:00 remaining.

St. Louis fought back to tie the score at 55-55 with 8:24 left but was then held without a field goal for over five minutes as the Gophers rebuilt their lead. Whalen started the 12-4 Gopher run with a three-play to break the tie with a Gilbert bucket ending the stretch.

The Billikens made a last run at the Gophers, getting the Minnesota lead down to four points with 1:46 remining, Piroglu responded with five straight points to end the threat.

Minnesota shot an impressive 55 percent from the field and held a commanding 42-27 advantage in rebounding.

The Gophers are off until Dec. 23, when they travel to Marist.
