GOPHER WOMEN DEFEAT MARIST, 79-61

defeateFreshman Tanisha Gilbert scored 18 points to lead four Golden Gophers who finished in double figures as the Minnesota women's basketball team defeated Marist, 79-61, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Saturday.

Gilbert made 8-of-10 field goal attempts to pace the Gophers to a 54 percent shooting performance from the floor. The 5-11 forward also added seven rebounds and two steals.

The Gophers used a 9-0 run late in the first half to build a 40-30 lead at halftime. Minnesota owned a 17-16 lead when a Lindsay Whalen started the run. She scored six of her 10 first-half points over the next five minutes as the Gophers built a 26-16 advantage.

Marist closed to within seven points in the opening minutes of the second half but the Gophers scored 13 unanswered points to take a 55-35 lead at the 15:17 mark. The Red Foxes were unable to get closer than 18 points the rest of the way.

Whalen hit 6-of-7 from the field to chip in 15 points. Freshman guard Leslie Hill came off the bench to contribute a career-high 12 points, while Kadidja Andersson added 10.

Minnesota improved its record to 7-3 on the season, the best mark heading into Big Ten Conference play since the Gophers were 7-2 in 1993-94. The Gophers open their league schedule on Dec. 28, when they visit defending Big Ten champion Penn State.
