GOLDEN GOPHERS CONCLUDE THIRD PRACTICE IN FORT LAUDERDALE

12/25/2000 12:00:00 AM | Football

normDressed in full pads for the first time, the University of Minnesota football team held a rigorous workout on Christmas Day in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Head Coach Glen Mason pushed practice from the normal starting time of 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to give the players and staff an opportunity to celebrate holiday.

During the practice, the team began with a series of contact drills before breaking into seven-on-seven. The quarterbacks and receivers worked against the defensive backs, while the running backs and linemen were pitted against the defensive line and linebacking corp. The offense and defense then split up and worked against their respective scout teams.

Tomorrow following practice at Pine Crest High School, the team and staff will gather at Beach Place for the Micronpc.com Bowl Beach Bash. At the same, the players and coaches will also meet with reporters in the traditional Media Day.

The Golden Gophers spent Christmas Eve together last night at a holiday dinner at the team hotel. Attendees were treated to Christmas carols sung by Dan Nystrom, Ben Utecht, Jake Kuppe and Jeff Norton. Following dinner, Santa Claus made his first appearance of the evening and presented gifts (personalized jerseys) to all of the children.

Head Coach Glen Mason

(on N.C. State defense)
They do a variety of things. They are aggressive on defense and they run very well. It is a style that is very similar to Purdue's. That helps with our preparation.

(on Minnesota secondary)
Right now we have one-half of a starting secondary, but we are going to be okay. Eli (Ward) is a solid player and he's done a good job of stepping in.

(on N.C. State Chuck Amato)
We have both been in college coaching a long time. I've known him for a while, but I don't know him all that well. Chuck's a good guy and it's going to be a football game.
