GOLDEN GOPHER MEN'S SWIMMING CLOSES IN ON GEORGIA
12/3/2000 12:00:00āÆAM | Men's Swimming & Diving
EverySunday will be an exciting day in the University of Georgia pool. It is the final day of the Georgia Invitational, and a strong Minnesota team trails the host school by only six points, 709-703. Every point will count for both No. 14 Georgia and No. 18 Minnesota as the final day of competition begins.
The Gophers' performance on Saturday was what allowed them to close in on the lead. They started the day with their first relay win of the meet. Todd Smolinski, Jeff Hackler, Chad Krastins and Grant Butler swam the 200 medley relay in 1:29.96 to take first and get a NCAA "B" qualifying time. The second Minnesota team (Ben Bartell, Dov Malnik, Matt Taylor and Mark Atwood) came in fourth to add more points for the Gophers.
Minnesota tallied more points in the 400 individual medley, as three freshmen placed in the top ten. Ryan Plummer, Justin Mortimer and Kris Carver took second, third and eighth, respectively. Both Plummer and Mortimer set "B" standard times at 3:53.19 and 3:54.05.
That was the story with nearly all the events. Minnesota had at least two, and most of the time three people scoring in each event. Many Gophers also had "B" qualifying times. Krastins took second with a time of 48.80 in the 100 butterfly. Brandon Crook won the 200 free with a time of 1:39.01 and Matt Taylor came in third. Hackler took second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 55.80. Smolinski and Bartell took first and third, respectively, with times of 48.92 and 49.30. Dan Croaston took his second diving title of the meet with a win in the 3- meter competition.
Minnesota capped off the day by winning the 800 free relay. Mortimer, Crook, Mark Dillon and Taylor took first with a "B" qualifying time of 6:36.93.
The finals for the last day of competition begin at 3 p.m.
