TWO GOLDEN GOPHER WRESTLERS WIN TITLES AT UNI OPEN

NortherRyan Lewis at 133 pounds and Jacob Volkmann at 165 pounds each won titles at the University of Northern Iowa Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa last weekend. Approximately 300 wrestlers from teams including Iowa, Iowa State, Northern Iowa, Nebraska, Illinois and Purdue participated in the tournament.

Lewis, a sophomore from Vernal, Utah, went 5-0 at the event, defeating Pat McNamara of Michigan State, the top seed and fourth-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds in Division I, 9-3 in the title match. Lewis is now 12-5 on the season.

Volkmann, a redshirt freshman from Henning, Minn., won the crown at 165 pounds, defeating top seed Matt Anderson of Iowa 1-0 in the championship match. Anderson is ranked 10th in the nation by Intermat. Volkmann, now 15-3 on the season, had three pins and a major decision en route to the title match.

Also competing at the tournament were freshmen Eric Anderson at 125 pounds, Jake Larsen and Jake Avre at 149 pounds, Nate Baker at 157 pounds, Casey Flaherty at 165 pounds, and Eli Ross at 197 pounds. The second-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team travels to the East Coast on Sunday, Dec. 10 to battle Hofstra in Hempstead, N.Y., and Princeton and Seton Hall at Lakewood High School in Lakewood, N.J.
