Championships. The University of Minnesota Cheerleading team won the Mid-America Regional Competition and will receive a paid bid to the Universal Cheerleading Association (UCA) National Cheerleading Championships. The competition will be held in Orlando, Fla., at Disney's Wide World of Sports on Jan. 11-15, 2001, and will be broadcast nationally on ESPN at a later date.

The Golden Gopher Cheerleading squad was one of eight teams that received paid bids to the championships. Ohio State won the east region, Hawai'i won the west region and Kentucky won the south, while Alabama, Ball State, LSU and Tennessee received at-large invitations. With its regional finish, Minnesota will receive a bye and advance directly to the finals of the competition.

This will be the seventh straight season the Golden Gophers will compete in the national championships, but the first time the squad has received a paid bid. Minnesota earned its highest finish in 1998 when the team placed eighth. Last year, the squad ended the competition in 11th place.
