dAfter dropping the first game of a doubleheader by a score of 7-6 in extra innings to Illinois State (1-2), the University of Minnesota (2-1) baseball team came back in the nightcap to gain a split, defeating the Redbirds by a score of 3-2 in 12 innings. Sophomore Jack Hannahan singled to score sophomore Scott Howard with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning to give the Golden Gophers the win.

Down by one headed into the 12th inning, freshman Scott Welch reached second on an error. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch with no one out. After junior Rick Brosseau popped up to second and Jason Kennedy struck out, Howard walked putting runners at the corners. Junior Josh Holthaus hit a sharp ground ball to Illinois State third baseman Seth Von Behren, whose throw to first pulled first baseman Ed Tolzein off the bag. The play kept the Golden Gophers alive setting up Hannahan's game-winning RBI single.

Junior Jason Shupe pitched the last two innings for Minnesota and picked up his first win of the season. Freshman C.J. Woodrow relieved starter junior Andy Persby in the fifth inning, and pitched six solid innings in his first collegiate game. Woodrow struck out five while yielding just four hits.

In the first game:
Illinois State' s Jake Perganson went 4-for-5 and Ryan Duncheon went 2-for-3 with two RBI's to help Illinois State to a 7-6 victory over Minnesota in extra innings. Seth Von Behren singled to left centerfield to score Chris Groth for the go-ahead run. For the Redbirds, it was their first victory over the Golden Gophers in five tries.

After spotting the Redbirds a 3-0 lead, the Golden Gophers scored a run in the fourth and four runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead. Sophomore Jack Hannahan doubled to left field to score Scott Howard and Jason Kennedy in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hannahan would later score the fourth run of the inning off of a Scott Welch single to left field.

Illinois State battled back to tie the game in the top of the sixth inning when Perganson singled to centerfield scoring Kevin O''Dell from third. Then with Scott Legan on third, he stole home to tie the game at 5-5. The Redbirds would take the lead at 6-5 in the top of the seventh inning when Legan would singled to right field scoring Von Hehren from third base.

Minnesota would send the game to extra innings when Welch got hit by a Todd Graham pitch with the bases loaded to score Brosseau from third.

The Golden Gophers will go on their first roadtrip of the season this weekend as they travel to Boca Raton, Fla. to face Flordia Atlantic in a three game series starting Friday night.
