GOLDEN GOPHER GYMNAST CLAY STROTHER EARNS BIG TEN HONORS

th University of Minnesota freshman gymnast Clay Strother was named as the Big Ten gymnast of the week for his performance last weekend in Minnesota's quadrangular meet at Ohio State.

The Jasper, Texas native scored a 9.95 on his pommel horse routine, breaking the Minnesota school record. The previous record was held by three gymnasts, including current volunteer assistant coach John Roethlisberger, who scored a 9.90 on Jan. 23, 1993. It is the second school record that Strother has broken this season as he set the school record on the floor exercise with a score of 9.95 on Feb. 4 in a triangular meet against Michigan and Penn State.

Strother is currently the top-ranked performer in the nation on the floor exercise with an NCAA two-score average of 9.90. He is tied for the fourth in the nation on the pommel horse with a score of 9.875.

The Golden Gophers will take face Illinois-Chicago in a dual meet on March 4 at 1 p.m. at the Sports Pavilion.
