MASSURA WINS SECOND BIG TEN TITLE IN 100 BACKSTROKE

The University of Minnesota swimming and diving team is still in third place after two days of the Big Ten Championships with 370 points, just eight points behind Penn State, who has 378 points. Michigan is still leading after two days with 437 points.
Junior Alex Massura won the 100-yard backstroke with a NCAA-automatic qualifying time of 47.62 to take his second consecutive Big Ten title in the 100 backstroke and overall fourth title of the championships. Massura was also apart of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that won a Big Ten title with a NCAA-provisional qualifying time of 6:30.46. Massura was also apart of the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 400-yard medley relay.
In the 200-yard medley relay, the relay team of Todd Smolinski, Dov Malnik, Chad Krastins and Ricardo Dornelas placed second with a pool record time of 1:28.85. Penn State won the relay with a winning-time of 1:28.27.
Senior Yoav Meiri placed 10th in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 3:56.68, while teammate Brian Howard placed 16th with a time of 4:02.12.
Sophomore Chad Krastins placed fifth in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.66.
Sophomore Max von Bodungen placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.80.
Freshman Jeff Hackler placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 55.39, which was a NCAA provisional qualifying time.
The 2000 Big Ten Championships conclude tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m. central and the finals starting at 6 p.m. central.
