Roth helped her Wayzata High School squad to a 15-2-1 record and an appearance in the Minnesota Class AA state tournament quarterfinals. The 5-3 forward led the Trojans with 31 goals and 11 assists during her junior season. Both marks are school single-season records. Roth earned Class AA All-State First Team honors, as well as second team all-metro acclaim.
"Rachael is a pure goal scorer who brings natural speed and intensity to our forward position," said Wickstrand. "She will not be your typical first-year player, in that she is so athletic and strong. She will make a name for herself quickly and compete immediately within the Big Ten and nationally."
Roth has been a Minnesota Olympic Development Program player from 1997-99. She is also a top-notch downhill skier and a contender for the state title this winter.
Wickstrand also announced that Amy Khaleel has committed to the Gophers as a recruited walk-on for next season.
Khaleel, a midfielder from Edina, Minn., earned honorable mention all-state honors after leading her Edina High School team to a 14-5-2 record record and the quarterfinals of the Minnesota Class AA state tournament. She was a four-time all-conference performer and her team's MVP in 1998.
"Amy is a smart player with great technical skills," said Wickstrand. "Her versatility will enable her to contribute immediately to our team."
Khaleel compete in the Minnesota Olympic Development Program in 1999 and will play in the Regional Camp 2000.
The Gophers expect to sign at least one more student- athlete during this signing period.
