GOLDEN GOPHERS DEFEAT NO. 13 WICHITA STATE SHOCKERS 17-9

StDown 5-2 after the third inning, the Golden Gopher baseball team (6-7) scored 14 unanswered runs, and went on to defeat the No. 13 Wichita State Shockers (4-2) by a score of 17-9 at Lawrence Dumont Stadium in Wichita, Kan. on Saturday afternoon. The game was resumed in the second inning after being postponed due to snow on Friday afternoon.

With Wichita leading 1-0 when play resumed in the top of the second inning, Minnesota's Rick Brosseau singled to right field scoring Luke Appert and Mike Arlt to give the Golden Gophers a 2-1 lead. Wichita would take a 5-2 lead after scoring four runs in the bottom of the third.

But from there it was all Minnesota, as the Golden Gophers put four runs on the board in the fourth, single runs in the sixth and seventh innings, and eight runs in the top of the eighth inning to open the game up. Leading 8-5 in the eighth, Minnesota sent 14 batters to the plate and forced the Shockers into three pitching changes in the inning. The eight runs in the eighth inning were the most runs scored in an inning by the Golden Gophers this year. Josh Holthaus, who doubled to center field scoring Scott Howard and Mike Arlt, delivered the big hit of the inning giving Minnesota's a 13-5 lead. The Golden Gophers would add three more runs in the inning to take a 16-5 lead. Holthaus would end the day going 2-for-5 with four RBIs.

Freshman pitcher C.J. Woodrow, who started the second inning for Friday starter Mike Kobow, pitched four innings, striking out five, to earn his first victory of his collegiate career. Woodrow worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth inning to keep Wichita off the board. With only one out and the bases load, Woodrow struck out Wichita third baseman Koyie Hill and got first baseman Pat Magness to fly out to left field.

Rick Brosseau extended his season-high eight-game hitting streak by going 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBIs and four runs scored on the day. Brosseau reached base seven times in the game as he would reach on a Wichita State error on two occasions and walked on two others. Sophomore Jason Kennedy was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

The second game of the three-game series was suspended due to darkness in the sixth inning with the Golden Gophers trailing the Shockers by a score of 2-1. The game will be resumed on Sunday at 11 a.m. with the third game of the series being played after its completion.
