GOPHER BASEBALL SPLIT TWO GAMES SUNDAY WITH #13 WICHITA STATE

tThe 13th-ranked Shockers won the first game Sunday 2-1 in a game that was started on Saturday. Wichita State led 2-1 in the sixth inning when the game was suspended. Neither team scored in the final three innings on Sunday. Minnesota got on the scoreboard first on Saturday with a an RBI single by Jason Kennedy scoring Mike Arlt. Wichita State answered with two runs in the bottom of the 4th inning to take the lead. Kelly Werner (1-2) took the loss for the Gophers, pitching five innings on Saturday. Andy Persby pitched three innings of shutout ball on Sunday.

In the second game Sunday the Gophers came up with their second win in three games against the Shockers. Minnesota jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after 3 innings. Luke Appert's RBi single in the first inning keyed a three- run inning. Minnesota added four runs in the third inning led by Chris Guetzlaff's three-run homer. The Shockers battled back, scoring six runs in the fourth inning, one in the sixth and one in the ninth, but Minnesota held on to beat the Shockers 10- 8. Vince Gangl (1-0) was the winning pitcher for the Gophers and Mike Kobow picked up the save.

Minnesota won the series 2-1 to improve their overall record to 7-8. Minnesota has won four of its last six games, including three wins over ranked teams.
