SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO AT CLEARWATER TOURNAMENT

MiThe Minnesota softball team split its first two games Thursday at the Clearwater Parks and Rec. Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. The Gophers defeated Fordham, 6-0, and lost to Northern Illinois, 7-0. Minnesota is 10-12 for the season.

In the first game, the Gophers scored five runs in the first two innings and cruised to a shutout victory. Sophomore Jordanne Nygren led a 12-hit attack with four singles, the first four-hit game of her career. First-year pitcher Meagan Hautala threw her second shutout of the season, a three-hitter, to improve her record to 3-0.

In the nightcap, Minnesota committed a season-high six errors, which led to seven unearned runs. Northern Illinois held a slim 1-0 lead entering the seventh inning, but scored six unearned runs after two were out to put the game away. Northern Illinois pitcher Courtney Witvliet threw a no-hitter, walking three and striking out six.

The Gophers continue in the tournament Friday against Syracuse at 2 p.m. and New Mexico at 6 p.m.
